Some days we fancy a weekend out of the city we stay in. For Singapore, the nearby cities would be either Johor Bahru or Batam. During one of the weekends in July, decided on an impromptu day trip to Johor Bahru for a few hours. This time-lapse article to curates the few eateries and things I did during my short 7 hours venture from 15:00 to 22:00.
14:00 Woodlands Checkpoint
Clearing immigration can be a hassle on weekends. It would make sense to take the train to Woodlands MRT, hop on bus service 903 to Woodlands Train Checkpoint for direct access to the Woodlands Checkpoint crossing. Upon clearing the immigration, take any bus available there for a ride to Sultan Iskandar CIQ, where you alight to clear the Malaysia Immigration. (Immigration clearance is subject to road and human traffic conditions). An alternative will be to buy KTM shuttle tickets online a few days or weeks in advance and arrive at the train station 30 minutes before the scheduled train departure.
I did a review on the train shuttle service here. Meanwhile, in the next coming few years – tentatively late 2024, the RTS system will be built and eventually replace this nostalgia causeway ride between Singapore and Johor Bahru.
After arriving at Johor Bahru and cleared the immigration, walk across the linkway from the immigration building past JB Sentral to City Square or Komtar JBCC where there are many eateries awaiting you to satisfy your hunger pangs.

15:30 Holiday Plaza
Next, we took Uber to Holiday Plaza. While it is a fast and convenient ride by Uber, take note that the pickup point for City Square is outside Levi’s store.
Over all Holiday Plaza, you get to shop and massage. There you can find a wide variety of goods ranging from mobile phone and electronic gadget accessories to services like the hair salon, nail spas and massage parlours. The price point is cheaper in comparison to City Square (the mall near the JB CIQ) and KSL City which is across the road from Holiday Plaza.

For dinner, we decided to settle for some soupy food. And we end up further north at about 20minutes car ride away.
Decided to venture out for dinner, and we ended up near Johor Jaya, very near to Aeon Tebrau City. Decided to visit the Goody Soup, which was recommended by the friend who went on the JB trip with me. The shop also serves pretty much a wide variety of clay pot soups – they have a list of signature and daily soups on a rotation basis.

21:00 Last Minute Shopping at JBCC
Post=dinner, it was nearing 21:00hr. About time to head back, so we took Uber from the soup place back to City Square and did some last minute shopping.
